Questions from Readers

I just returned from Denver at the Do It Best Show. It was such a large show that I didn’t get to visit each booth. I am so excited about some of the new products that we will be bringing into the store. As simple as a well priced electric screw driver to the newest way to give your furniture a new look. I will be writing about it all in the next few months. We had some really good questions from the email that I wanted to share. I am hoping these answers also help you at your home.

Question: My daughter has an upstairs bathroom that is never used. She says the hard water stain is so tough to remove. I was wondering what you would suggest to help clean the toilet?

Answer: Two things that work together that will get rid of hard water stains are a Flexi Scour and Delete Germ. It is the best toilet bowl cleaner for hard water. It was originally formulated for hospitals, so it's not only a cleaner but also a disinfectant. Pour it full strength into the bowl, and then lift the lid on the tank and pour it down the overflow pipe. Let it work overnight. The next morning, using gloves, use the Flexi Scour to scrub the hard water build-up from the bowl. It will come off easily. Then flush the toilet. Now, not only will the toilet be clean, but it will also smell fresh and be disinfected. Use it once a week. All products are on the website.

Question: On our concrete patio, we have oil stains from grilling. What is the best way to remove the stains?

Answer: Use a heavy-duty degreaser like Krud Kutter. Spray it every 15 minutes for an hour, keeping the area wet throughout. On the final application, scrub with a broom, then rinse. Allow it to dry completely, and if a stain persists, repeat if needed. Grill pads are available for protection; Broil King offers a 36 x 60 model that fits most grills and costs about $35.00. If you need assistance finding either product, call me at 210-341-1573.

Question: While I was out at the store, I picked up a bottle of Restor-A-Finish to use on my front door. I got it home, and it says not to use it outdoors. Can I use it on my door? If I can’t, I will have to refinish the door, and I really don’t want to go to all that trouble.

Answer: Absolutely, you can use it on the front door. First, thoroughly clean the door to remove all dust and dirt. Once dry, use a soft rag (such as a Libman Tear and Wipe Microfiber) to apply Restor-A-Finish in a shade matching the door's original stain. Allow it to dry. Reapply if another coat is needed. Restor-A-Finish will revitalize the door's appearance, making the color look newly refinished. Afterward, protect the finish with SunShield, a penetrating wax that guards against UV rays and damage, replenishes dry wood, and highlights the wood's natural beauty. This is an excellent project.

Question: I have some barstools that have become wobbly. I really like these stools because they are just the right height for the bar. So what do I need for glue, and do I have to take them apart, sand the glued joints, and re-glue?

Answer: Use Tite Chairs by Wonderlok 'Em. To best prepare clean the surface with acetone. Press the joint into the fitting. With the fine-tipped nozzle, drip Tite Chairs into the joint—its water-thin formula penetrates deeply and tightens quickly. The chair should be ready for use in 30 minutes, and the adhesive dries clear. Remove any excess with acetone. Since you're working on the bar stools, add a Magic Slider to the bottom of each leg. Magic Sliders are the original slider for multi surface protection. I think Magic Sliders are the best rated slider on the market. Magic Sliders are available in nail-in, screw-in, and adhesive-backed versions, and they will protect your floor from scratches.

Question: Squirrels have just about taken over my back yard. And they have torn up my chair cushions. I know that people like squirrels, but at my house, they do so much damage. Is there anything that really works as far as squirrels?

Answer: Morgan’s Squirrel Bloc worked effectively for my mom at her home. She experienced the same issues. Morgan’s repellent contains natural oils that deter squirrels. Call me at the store, and I’ll explain how to use Morgan’s most effectively.
