Neutralizing Odors in Nursing Homes

  • , by Trudy Chuoke Trudy Chuoke

I have come to the age in my life, in my 70’s, that I don’t visit friends with newborn babies any longer, but friends that are living in nursing homes. It’s a hard life fact but it’s something I have had to embrace. And I’m OK with that. But I don’t care how expensive the nursing home is, there is an odor that lingers in the air that I can’t tolerate. Nor did I want my friend to have to live with it either. So, I decided to do something about it.

Air Sponge is an odor neutralizer. It doesn’t cover up odors or try to mask them, it removes the odor. And when you are talking about the odors that come with full time care, you don’t want some floral scent trying to do a job that it was never intended to do. I love candles, we have twelve different lines of candles in my hardware store. So, bringing in a candle, or diffuser or room spray would have been easy- but not up for the job. You need something different, something made for continuing odor. And that’s Air Sponge. And the great part, it’s easy, it’s economical and it works 24-7 whether you are there or not.

Air Sponge comes in three different sizes, ½ pound, 1 pound and 4 pounds. For a room that’s about 250 sq. ft. the ½ pound size is perfect. You can put it in a corner of the room on a tabletop and you will never see it. But you will definitely be able to tell it’s working. Open the lid of Air Sponge and immediately you will notice a difference. Air Sponge molecules will go up into the air and capture the odor molecules and bring them down to the floor and will the regular cleaning of the room the molecules will removed. Air Sponge is made of charcoal and a soap-based gel, and it is biodegradable and safe. For a room that is 300 sq. ft and under the ½ pound should last about 4 to 6 weeks.

Air Sponge can be used in so many areas where odors linger. Your car that has cigarette smoke odor. The baby’s room that has diaper odor. You child’s closet that has an athletic odor. You can use it at work. Did you just paint a room, open Air Sponge and let it remove any lingering odor. Someone burn something on the stove? Did you cook fish? Burnt popcorn? It will take care of all these odors. Just remember to put it up on a countertop or shelf where air flow can move it around.

So, if you have a stinky situation, open up an Air Sponge. If you have a pungent odor, here is a tip. When you open Air Sponge, turn it over and let the entire product lay on the lid. You will be exposing 75% of the product. This will shock the air and rid the room of any odor. Remember the stronger the smell (think skunk) the faster Air Sponge will dissipate. When there is only a charcoal cookie left in the container, it’s time to replace your Air Sponge.

I hope you are enjoying the projects that I am writing about each first of the month. January was using a White Ring Remover and February was using Morgan’s Repellent. Let me know if you have a project that you need help with, and we will tackle it together.

Now to the email....

Question: We have light colored pavers on our patio. A couple of months ago we were cooking outdoors and grease splattered on the pavers. I have tried a couple of degreasers, and my husband power washed it. As soon as it’s dry, the oily stain comes back. What do you suggest to remove the stains?

Answers: I have a couple of suggestions. If you can remove the paver, flip it to the other side so that the oily stain is facing the bottom. If that’s not possible, try Drive Up. Drive Up only comes in a gallon so you might have some left over. Spray the area four times in an hour, keeping it wet for the hour. Then the last time you spray it, give a scrub with a broom, and then rinse it with clear water. No need to power wash it again.
