Mega Magnetic Bit Holder

  • , by Trudy Chuoke Trudy Chuoke

How many times have you positioned a screw on the bit in your drill, and the minute you start trying to install the screw, it falls off the bit, and you have to start all over? And of course, it’s when you are in a terrible, uncomfortable position, or you are having to hold something heavy while trying to install a screw. It’s so frustrating. It will make your job take twice as long. Well, I found a tool for you!

Ivy Classic makes the Mega Magnetic Bit Holder®  . We have magnetic bit holders, and they do an OK job. But this bit holder has 2 powerful magnets, providing 40 times the pulling power of a standard bit holder. Why two magnets? The first magnet holds and magnetizes the bit, and the second magnet powerfully holds your fastener in place. You can use it with a regular drill, and it can withstand the high torque of impact drivers. And you can use it with any 1” inset bit. It’s stainless steel, so it’s really tough.

At first, when I was looking at this bit holder, I thought this would be good for contractors. But then, when I realized how easy this would make a job for a woman, because it stabilizes the screw, I was sold. I’m getting ready to hang some SS pegboard in my garage for tool storage, and I can’t wait to use this tool accessory. Let me tell you how it works. Insert it directly into the chuck of the drill as far as it will go. Make sure it’s straight. Turn the chuck sleeve clockwise to tighten. Insert the bit. The magnet is so strong that it will pull it to the opening. Attach the screw to the bit and then slide the gold sleeve down. The second magnet grips the screw and will hold it in place. Now you don’t have to worry about dropping and losing screws while doing your project.

I did a deep dive into the business to find out more about them. They have been a family-owned business since 1929. So, they are approaching 100 years old. And the original owner was an English blacksmith named Albert Story. And the reason he named the company IVY was simple and made perfect sense. Each letter of IVY is a straight line, so it was simple to weld together. And it reminded me of when I asked my grandfather why he named the lumber yards Acme Lumber… he replied: “because it was the first name in the yellow pages.” Advertising was certainly much simpler. The Mega Magnetic Bit Holder will be on our site and retail for 11.99.

Now to the email….

Question: I have water stains on the cabinet drawer front under the sink. I have tried several types of polish, and they might fade the stains for a bit, but a day later, they show up again. What can I use?

Answer: Go to your local hardware store and purchase Restore A Finish in the color closest to your cabinet color. But it doesn’t have to be a perfect match. Restore is very forgiving. Using a soft cloth, wipe Restore across the front of the drawer. Go in the direction of the wood, apply one coat, and let it dry. You might have to apply it twice. Then, once it’s dry, apply Feed and Wax to the drawer front for protection from future splashing. Easy fix!

Question: The previous owners applied house numbers using silicone caulking. Well, we removed the numbers, and the silicone stuck to the brick, and we can not get it off. I have tried paint thinner, acetone, and a degreaser, and nothing fazes it. And it’s stuck into all the crevices of the brick. What can I use?

Answer: Contractor’s Solvent by DeSolv. It will remove silicone caulking. Spray the area one number at a time. Let it work for a minute. Then use a plastic bristle brush to clean the area. You might have to repeat the process to remove all the silicone. Contractor’s Solvent will also remove roof tar, floor adhesives, lacquer, and asphalt. It’s the only remover for silicone caulk around tubs and showers. If you remove silicone caulk around the tub or shower, replace it with Clean Seal or Lexel by Sashco Sealants. They are the only ones that will not mildew.
